Record ore throughput, improving metal recoveries and nearly $30 million in quarterly operating cash flow are strengthening Develop Global Limited's (ASX: DVP) transformation into a diversified mining business.
The company's September 2026 quarterly results, released on 29 October, demonstrate growing operational momentum across its Woodlawn copper-zinc mine, Pioneer Dome lithium project and Yitirrti development.
However, with up to $458 million earmarked for growth capital this financial year, the bigger question is whether expanding production can support its ambitious investment programme.
Key numbers
- 202,334 tonnes: Woodlawn ore mined during the September quarter, a quarterly record.
- 201,130 tonnes: Ore processed, up 17% from the June quarter.
- $57.4 million: Woodlawn concentrate sales revenue from 19,614 tonnes sold.
- $29.6 million: Quarterly net operating cash inflow, alongside $58.6 million invested in growth capital.
- $95.5 million: Closing cash at 30 September 2026, supported by approximately $504 million in undrawn financing facilities.
Record Woodlawn production demonstrates operational progress
Develop's 29 October quarterly report confirmed record mining and processing throughput at its Woodlawn copper-zinc mine in New South Wales.
The operation mined 202,334 tonnes and processed 201,130 tonnes during the September quarter, with processing volumes increasing 17% from June.
Zinc recoveries improved from 75% to 83%, while copper recoveries reached 79%.
However, copper-equivalent production declined to 3,697 tonnes from 4,653 tonnes in the previous quarter.
Management attributed the reduction to a deliberate decision to process accessible, lower-grade ore containing valuable precious metals.
This distinction matters because higher throughput does not automatically translate into increased metal production.
Develop maintained its FY27 production guidance, supported by approximately 1.54 million tonnes of developed ore grading 2.8% copper equivalent.
The company also reported a significant exploration intersection of 12.2 metres at 15.7% copper equivalent, highlighting potential resource growth within Woodlawn.
Strong operating cash flow faces substantial investment demands
Develop generated approximately $29.6 million in net operating cash inflows during the September quarter.
However, net investing activities consumed $46.8 million, while financing activities resulted in a further $12.1 million outflow.
Consequently, cash declined from $124.8 million at 30 June to $95.5 million at 30 September.
The company invested approximately $58.6 million in growth capital during the quarter as it advanced its broader development programme.
FY27 growth capital guidance remains between $411 million and $458 million.
Of this amount, approximately $367 million to $406 million relates to Yitirrti, concentrating substantial expenditure on a single major development project.
Develop also reported approximately $504 million in undrawn financing facilities, providing additional liquidity.
However, these facilities represent borrowing capacity rather than unrestricted cash, with future drawdowns potentially increasing financing obligations.
The distinction between operating cash generation and free cash flow is important.
Although Develop's existing activities are generating positive operating cash flow, substantial growth investment continues to place pressure on its overall cash position.
Pioneer Dome approaches its first lithium shipment
Develop commenced lithium mining at Pioneer Dome in Western Australia during the September quarter.
The operation is progressing towards its first direct shipping ore shipment, now targeted for 9 November 2026.
This milestone represents an important step towards establishing a second producing asset alongside Woodlawn.
Management has indicated that the first 150,000 tonnes of material are covered by a floor-price arrangement, providing some protection against weaker lithium prices.
However, commodity price volatility remains a significant consideration for the project's longer-term economics.
Develop will need to demonstrate reliable shipment volumes, competitive operating costs and sufficient cash generation to support continued investment.
The company has not yet committed to a broader underground development programme at Pioneer Dome, with future investment decisions dependent on market conditions and project economics.
Yitirrti development progresses ahead of schedule
Develop continues to advance construction at its Yitirrti copper-silver-zinc project.
Underground development reached 991 metres during the September quarter, exceeding the planned schedule.
Processing plant construction also progressed, with first concentrate production remaining targeted for the June 2028 quarter.
Yitirrti represents a substantial growth opportunity, potentially expanding Develop's future production and revenue base.
However, the project's significant capital requirements introduce construction, financing and execution risks.
Any delays, cost overruns or changes in commodity prices could affect expected returns.
Successful delivery within budget and schedule will therefore be essential to determining whether the investment creates sustainable shareholder value.
Mining Services provides another source of revenue growth
Develop Mining Services generated $46.4 million in external revenue during the September quarter.
Activities continued across projects including Waihi and BP33, supporting the company's strategy of combining mining operations with specialist underground contracting expertise.
Management reaffirmed FY27 Mining Services revenue guidance of $100 million to $110 million.
The company also expects an annualised revenue exit run rate of approximately $175 million to $180 million by the end of FY28 as existing contracts reach more mature operating levels.
Importantly, this represents a projected annualised exit rate rather than full-year FY28 revenue guidance.
The contracting division provides diversification and potential cash generation outside Develop's wholly owned mining assets.
Nevertheless, contract execution, labour availability, equipment expenditure and operating margins remain important determinants of profitability.
Insight: Growth must deliver returns that justify the capital commitment
What stands out to us is Develop's ability to generate positive operating cash flow while simultaneously advancing two major growth projects.
Woodlawn's improving performance provides encouraging evidence of operational capability, while Pioneer Dome and Yitirrti offer meaningful production opportunities.
However, quarterly investing outflows exceeded operating cash generation, demonstrating the financial demands of the expansion strategy.
We believe Develop's integrated mining services capabilities provide a competitive advantage through internal technical expertise, project development experience and diversified revenue opportunities.
The market may be underestimating the importance of project sequencing, particularly as Pioneer Dome approaches its first lithium shipment while Yitirrti absorbs substantial construction capital.
Our assessment remains constructive on business quality but cautious on valuation until rising production delivers stronger free cash flow, manageable financing obligations and returns that justify the substantial development expenditure.
