ANZ Group Holdings (ASX: ANZ) Delivers $7.59 Billion Profit, but Can Its $902 Million Cost-Cutting Success Last?

ANZ Group Holdings Limited (ASX: ANZ) has delivered a 31% increase in annual cash profit to $7.59 billion, supported by substantial cost reductions and improved operational efficiency. However, the headline result raises an important question: can Australia's fourth-largest bank sustain stronger earnings as credit pressures increase and its transformation enters a critical phase?

The bank's full-year results, released on 9 November 2026, demonstrate progress under its ANZ 2030 strategy, although the sustainability of those improvements remains central to its financial outlook.

Key Numbers Behind ANZ's Results

  • Cash profit: $7.591 billion for FY26, up 31%, or 10% excluding significant FY25 items.
  • Statutory profit: $7.270 billion for the year ended 30 September 2026.
  • Productivity benefits: $902 million, exceeding management's revised $875 million target.
  • Operating efficiency: Cost-to-income ratio improved to 49.26%, while cash return on tangible equity reached 11.56%.
  • Shareholder returns: Final dividend of 83 cents per share, 80% franked, bringing full-year dividends to $1.66 per share.

ANZ's Cost Reductions Deliver Stronger Profitability

ANZ's latest results highlight the financial impact of its restructuring under chief executive Nuno Matos.

Although the reported 31% cash profit increase appears substantial, the more meaningful comparison excludes significant items affecting FY25. On that basis, underlying cash profit increased 10%.

The improvement reflects disciplined cost management, margin protection and business growth.

ANZ delivered $902 million in gross productivity benefits, exceeding the $875 million target outlined at its half-year results.

Its cost-to-income ratio improved by more than four percentage points to 49.26%, demonstrating stronger operating efficiency.

However, the central challenge is whether ANZ can maintain these improvements while continuing to invest in technology, regulatory compliance and customer growth.

What Stands Out to Us

ANZ's established operations across Australia, New Zealand and international institutional banking provide competitive advantages through customer relationships, deposit funding and extensive distribution networks.

Its diversified business model also supports earnings resilience across different economic conditions.

Nevertheless, credit quality deserves closer attention.

Total credit impairment charges increased approximately 32% to $582 million during FY26, compared with $441 million in FY25.

Individual provision charges reached $360 million, while collective provision charges increased to $222 million.

The higher collective charge reflects portfolio growth and emerging economic risks, particularly rising interest rates and cost-of-living pressures.

Importantly, non-performing exposures remained at 0.57% of total credit exposure, suggesting overall credit quality remains relatively stable.

ANZ's Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio of 11.99% provides additional financial resilience.

For valuation, the key consideration is whether improved operating returns can be sustained without a corresponding increase in credit losses or restructuring expenditure.

Stronger profitability alone does not establish that the shares are undervalued.

What ANZ Is Doing Now

ANZ is progressing its ANZ 2030 transformation strategy, focusing on operational simplification, technology integration and regulatory remediation.

Management expects to complete the Suncorp Bank integration by June 2027 and deliver a single customer front-end for retail and small-business customers by September 2027.

These initiatives could improve customer experience, reduce operational complexity and support further productivity gains.

The bank is also advancing its regulatory remediation commitments through the PACT Program and ASIC Matters Resolution Program.

Meanwhile, ANZ continues supporting institutional customers across its international network, particularly in infrastructure financing, debt capital markets and supply chain finance.

Insight: Can ANZ Turn Cost Savings Into Sustainable Earnings Growth?

We think ANZ's FY26 results provide credible evidence that its restructuring is improving underlying business performance. Delivering $902 million in productivity benefits while increasing cash return on tangible equity demonstrates stronger operational discipline. However, cost reductions alone cannot sustain earnings expansion indefinitely. Rising credit provisions, major technology integration commitments and regulatory remediation costs remain important risks. ANZ's established banking franchise and robust capital position provide a solid foundation, but our assessment would strengthen if the bank demonstrated sustained revenue growth alongside stable credit quality and further improvements in recurring profitability.

What Happens Next?

FY27 will be a defining year for ANZ's transformation strategy.

The planned Suncorp Bank integration and customer platform rollout represent major operational milestones, although successful delivery will depend on managing implementation costs and execution risks.

Shareholders should also monitor net interest margins, credit impairment charges, operating expenses and return on tangible equity.

The unchanged full-year dividend of $1.66 per share reinforces the importance of sustainable earnings growth rather than relying solely on headline profit improvements.

ANZ has demonstrated its ability to reduce costs and strengthen operational performance. The next test is whether those gains can translate into consistent profitability and stronger shareholder returns beyond the initial restructuring phase.
